Spoken Word pieces should be submitted by the end of class on Wednesday, January 8th . Either google doc or google video should be titled Spoken Word [Student Name]. Google file should be shared to jcdavidge@educbe.ca. Also, order forms for the book went out today and are due by Friday, January 17.

Now that stories are submitted, we are going to work on Spoken Word Pieces: 1) Choose an issue or concern that you want to address. 2) Research that issue 3) Write a spoken word piece about it 4) Record that piece into iMovie or garage band 5) Use iMovie to create a video of your piece.  You could record yourself or use images to acompany the vocals. 6) Export/share your movie that it can be stored on google drive. 7) Share that google file with jcdavidge@educbe.ca Deadline: January 8th, 2020

First Drafts of short stories should be shared with Mr. Davidge via google share to jcdavidge@educbe.ab.ca.  You story file should have the story title and your first name and last name initial.  First draft are due by Friday, November 8. Before you submit your story to our Final Draft submission by Monday November 18: 1) Ensure your tenses are consistent. Most fiction is written in the past tense and it is very challenging to write on the present tense (as a story tends to move through a series of events that exist in different stages in time). It is common to accidentally write certain passages or sentences in the present tense but that should be addressed before your final submission. 2) Ensure your dialogue is formatted accurately.  A handout was given to help with this. 3) Set the general font for your story to Georgia, Size 12. 4) Title your story and then have your author name on the line below it. Today, after the excellent and funny presentation by author Richard Van Camp this morning, we watched this video on how to have humour in your writing . Reminder that we are hoping to have first drafts done by Monday, October 28 (extended).

The first draft of our stories are due by Wednesday, November 6. Students who are interested in creating a cover for our book should let Mr. Davidge know by the end of this week.  By the end of next week (Oct 18) they should share 3 colour images for review - either digital (preferred) or hard copy.  These can be shared in a google folder to jcdavidge@educbe.ca. Last class we had a lesson on the Hero's Journey as defined by Joseph Campbell. Tomorrow we are going to read a short story Harrison Bergeron  by Kurt Vonnegut.

Today we did an inspiration writing exercise to help plan our story. Students were also given their Story Plan sheet that should be shared with me by Monday, September 23. Welcome to my blog for Creative Writing 9.  Here you can find course updates, learning resources and other items related to the glorious craft of storytelling. More details will be shared later but in general we will be focused on writing/publishing our annual short story anthology and then developing spoken word pieces.

As our course draws to a close, writers are encouraged to seek out more ways to share their stories and develop their craft. Today students were given an order form for our book.  Orders are due by Wednesday, Dec 19. We continue to work on Spoken Word.  A hard copy of the spoken word piece is due by the start of Wednesday, Dec 12.

After receiving some student input we have designed the following covers for our upcoming publication:

The first proof for our book has been prepared.  This proof still has to be copy edited by Mr. Davidge. Today is that last day to get your story in for publication. For those of you who have already submitted your story for publication, please review this proof linked here for any formating errors or other edits.  All edits must be done through Mr. Davidge at this stage.

As we wrap the class time to work on stories, some students are already working on spoken word pieces.  Oor goal will be to create pieces that we then will video record for digital sharing. Here are some tips for writing spoken word .

On Monday, November 12 all students should have shared their story for our anthology titled  Falling from the Flames with Mr. Davidge via google to his google address (jcdavidge@educbe.ca).  On that day, Mr. Davidge will be starting to copy stories into the publishing file (that students don't have direct access to) and will begin editing for publication. Cover artists should have their final image to Mr. Davidge by Monday, November 19 . Be sure to have room for the title (but don't put in the title). Dimensions should be 6x9 and any digital images shared should be 300 dpi (dots per inch).

We have a title to our upcoming book: Falling from the Flames Students are doing edits and rewrites on their stories.  Next week I will be taking the drafts and creating our publishing manuscript for final review and assessment. Cover artists have been notified of their selection.  They have been tasked with creating three layout sketches of possible cover ideas for sharing with the class next Monday November 5th.
